The Perfect Family Photoshoot: Advice for Parents

Richmond Family Photography by London Family Photographer, Meredith Bratton

While getting everyone ready and out the door on time can feel like an achievement in itself, the key to a relaxed, memorable session is all about letting go of perfection and embracing the moment. Here are my five top tips to make your family photoshoot a day to remember:

  1. Engage and Connect: Get down to your child's eye level and I assure you you will see their face brighten with excitement. Whether it’s wrapping them in a playful hug or spinning them around, these little moments of interaction will bring out natural smiles and genuine happiness. Share a glance with your partner, make them laugh, or just have a light conversation. When you’re relaxed and connected, it translates beautifully into photos.

  2. Embrace Spontaneity: Some of the most memorable photos come from spontaneous moments. Allow your children to be themselves and encourage them to express their personalities freely. These candid shots often capture the true essence of your family and make for beautiful keepsakes. Embrace the fun of the day, and you’ll walk away with more than just stiff posed pictures.

  3. Be in the moment. Right, this one all comes down to Y-O-U because your energy sets the tone. If you’re relaxed and having fun, your family will follow suit.  So hit pause on the chaos of daily life and just be together. Don’t just stand on the sidelines, jump in, and make the most of the experience!

  4. Pack Spare Clothes: Let’s face it, accidents happen, especially with little ones. Be prepared by bringing a spare set of clothes for each child, just in case. This way, you can quickly address any mishaps. Pack everything the night before and then keep the clothes in the car boot or in the bottom of the pram.

  5. Bring Dry Snacks : If there’s a dip in energy during our photoshoot dry snacks like raisins, crackers or cereal bars can come in handy if we need to bring energy levels back up. The key here is to stick with dry snacks – nothing sticky, juicy, or melty that could end up all over outfits. A quick snack break can often reset the mood and keep the fun going.

With these tips in mind, your family photoshoot will be a success and experience filled with fun. Let’s do this!
