Baby Photography by London Family Photographer, Meredith Bratton
If your recent search history includes “what to wear for a family photo shoot” or “family photo shoot outfit ideas”, well, you’re not alone! I’m Meredith Bratton, a London based, newborn and family photographer and this is one of the most common questions I hear from the amazing parents I work with. While personal style is deeply individual and plays a big role in how we express ourselves, there are definitely some tried-and-true tips that can really give your images that extra polished lift. So families of London, look no further! Whether you’re looking for inspiration or guidance, this list will help you create a harmonious look that complements each of your unique family members while ensuring your photos turn out beautifully.
1. Don’t Make Last Minute Wardrobe Decisions
This is my absolute top tip and possibly the most important! Really. Have a good think well in advance of your shoot because no one wants to feel the pressure of not knowing what to wear the night before a photo shoot. When it comes to your family’s outfits, a bit of planning and intentionality can make all the difference. Thoughtfully chosen outfits will ensure that you walk away with timeless, visually cohesive images that reflect the elevated look you’re after. Even if you have a laid-back, casual style, trust me—taking the time to coordinate can truly enhance the overall feel of your photos. Dressing your family for a photo shoot can be simple and easy as long as we're mindful of what works. Chances are if you're on this page, you're already ahead of the same. So let's get started on your family photo shoot styling today!
2. Start with a Colour Palette
Choose a cohesive colour palette that suits the season and location. Avoid overly bright, neon colours or busy patterns, as these can distract from the faces and emotions in the photo. Instead here are a few popular colour combinations to consider:
Great Colour Combinations for Family Photography
Neutral Palette: Beige, cream, soft grey, ivory (great for a clean, timeless look).
Earthy Tones: Olive green, tan, rust, warm browns
Soft Pastels: Blush, baby blue, mint, light lavender (light, airy, great for spring/summer)
Use the above colour combinations as a starting point and have fun!
3. Compliment, Don’t Match
Dressing for a photo shoot truly is a balancing act! We’re trying to showcase individuality whilst conveying a united family front. A common pitfall that I’ve seen time and time again is dressing everyone, head to toe, in the exact same outfit. Instead, you can coordinate colours within the same palette (see above). For example, one person can wear a solid colour while another wears subtle patterns that incorporates similar shades. You can create visual interest amongst the outfits by playing with textures and fabrics.
Helpful Tip: Pick one or two dominant colours and then build the wardrobe around those shades in various forms.
4. Textures and Layers
Textures and layers can add depth and warmth to photos. Layers work especially well in cooler seasons. Try to incorporate clothing items such as:
• Chunky knit sweaters
• Denim jackets
• Scarves, cardigans, or light layers for variety
• Linen for a breezy, summery feel
5. Accessorise
Accessories can enhance the overall look of your photo and add a beautiful touch of personality, generational history and luxury. Ideally, accessories should be kept minimal to avoid distraction. Jewellery such as simple necklaces or earrings work well, but stay clear of anything that's too flashy or over the top.
Speaking of simplicity, the value of a good belt cannot be overstated. Belts are more than just a functional accessory, they play a crucial role in pulling together all of the different elements of an outfit. Belts can define your silhouette, creating a flattering shape by emphasizing the waist. In dresses, a cinched belt can transform a loose-fitting garment into a chic, figure-flattering ensemble. Long before I got into family photography, I worked in production. Once on a photo shoot, I overheard a stylist say "you're naked until you're wearing a belt". For some reason that idea has always stuck with me and now I pass on that pearl of wisdom to you!
Prioritise Comfort
Styling for a family photo shoot is all about coordination, intentionality and comfort. How you feel in an outfit translates into how you come across in the images your photographer takes. When everyone feels comfortable, it shows in the photos with natural, playful expressions and relaxed poses.
At the end of the day, no matter what you wear, remember that the most important thing is to enjoy the moment and embrace this experience with your family. Hopefully these easy, actionable tips will leave you feeling prepared, relaxed and looking your best for your next family photo shoot.
